I hope this doesn't turn this into another myspace where people mindlessly leave spam comments on users' pages with little regard of the human connection that should've taken place beforehand.
I see this vehicle as a means to connect with one another and establish real relationships beyond posting flyers everywhere.
I know a lot of us here are trying to promote and network and thats all good, but I'd like to see this community actually flourish and not serve as a poster board.
Hey Brother El!! Fancy running into you over here. LOL
I agree 100% with your comment. I'm looking forward to where this site will go as long as all involve keep it nice and positive.
Blessings!
It won't if we keep it specialized-- to SOUL only!
I agree-- as much as I want to see this space grow and have a wide wide reach-- I still would like to see it being intimate and catering to US. So we really have a forum!!!
Elliott: I see your point and agree with you 100%. Maybe I'm just looking at this through "rose-colored glasses" but my gut feeling is that this place, this community will not fall into that trap. I get a sense that folks are looking at this space as an opportunity to "do social networking the right way". One of the immediate things that strikes me is the depth and breadth of people that are involved in some quality projects with music and entertainment in all the different genres. I think that folks are looking at SoulCommune as a place where they can not only promote the projects they are involved in, but to also meet and eventually collaborate with quality, like-minded people to make those projects successful. For example, I love the fact that DH setup all of the regional sub-Communes that will allow people who are geographically (more or less) close to one another to discover others in their immediate vicinity.
I have only been on SC for less than a week (although with the fast growth of this place that's making me look like an "old veteran" around here {smile}) and I am discovering many, many Soul/Jazz music blogs that I plan to start visiting on a regular basis. These discoveries are only the start. I expect knowledge exchange, true friendships and, who knows, maybe even a business venture or two to be a part of the process/experience also.
Thanks for saying what I was feeling, Elliott. I don't think this spot has been in existence for a full week yet and I'm looking at the number of members taking off like crazy. What's made me smile every time I peek in (of course when I'm supposed to be doing something really productive) is that the comments left on my page are from either artists or promoters whom I totally respect, reaching out to encourage me at what I'm doing. It makes the ego feel really great, I must say. Happily I report that in the NY commune, we're already talking and setting a date to get together offline and make some big things happen and the other night I got a call from an artist in DENMARK who's coming to the US and planning to work with us (ONUTSS) and there have been others to contact me for the same reason. So, I see this space as an exceptionally vital networking tool and I can only envision it progressing provided we stay focused. I'm sure we'll have some infiltrators here and there, but that's what the powers-that-be need to keep an eye out for!
SoulCommune has a different vibe and intention than Myspace did. Myspace had a business model with profit in mind, so I'm thinking it attracted alot of like-intentioned individuals.
You can feel the heart in SoulCommune. It's uncontrived, warm, and grassroots-based. I think it will only continue to expand in that light.
It's definitely better than Myspace. You took the words out of my mouth on that one.

"I hope this doesn't turn this into another myspace where people mindlessly leave spam comments on users' pages with little regard of the human connection that should've taken place beforehand."
I'm sorry, but dude is right. I get lots of spam mail, but not on my page, Every time I open my message box, it's spam about someone's new album or track. I don't mind when they send one out, but when they send more then one, it frustrates me.
Sending you a hi-five on this... totally agree with you on the Myspace and spam thing! Any people I catch inviting me to be a friend and then posting what I think is spam as a comment without my permission will be deleted forthwith! lol
I remember what it was like finding communities such as this where we all shared a common bond, Soul Music. Time and technology has allowed all of us to find artists that we would have never come close to in certain record shops or on the radio. I think that idea alone will allow this to flourish and the support of the tastemakers in this industry will fight to keep that MySpace vibe in its rightful place.
I'm in total agreement. I believe people will take a look around, like I did, and you can see and feel the difference immediately. Besides the fact that this site targets the soul community, there's a more intellectual approach and an immediate sense of "respect" when you view the pages, bio's, blogs, and comments. People are actually networking and communicating with each other. While I was still setting up my page when I joined, I made a new friend, and we're going to collaborate on something. That was in the first hour. If people look around, I don't think they will be as quick to turn your comment space into a billboard. Spammers and "insensitive self promoters" may come, but I think here they'll find that the delete and block button is like a weapon of mass destruction.
Love and Peace.
Quality and Promise is what I see on this site. You have artists, promoters and fans alike that are in accord in what we love and that's what made me join this site. Everyone who has replied to this thread I'm in total agreement as I look at this "thing" right here being so positive with a lot of insight. I'm just glad to be a part of this and I hope that I'll be able to make some here as well with others.
MySpace has gotten watered down- too much guerilla marketing and those nagging spam comments have plagued that site but I really like Soul Commune.... big things are coming!
