I am fortunate to have been of a time when Phyllis Hyman was on the music scene...I use to attend her concerts with either my mother or my uncle...and I still have all her albums...
Everybody knew how I loved me some Phyllis Hyman...
Even to this day I still listen to You Know How to Love Me...and rock and sing to it just as loud as I did back then...
I have many memories of Phyllis Hyman...
Did you watch the TV 1 special...share your memories...
Never had the opportunity to see her perform growing up in Western Canada. However, sorting through LPs in the public library, I was struck by her undeniable presence and beauty. Needless to say, I've been an appreciator ever since.
On a more personal note, I do remember the evening when I heard of her passing. It's a long ass story which I won't go into, but I do remember a monumental shift taking place in my perspective on life and love. Through all the sadness, she managed to give this stranger a better understanding of the fragile nature of humanity versus the strength of spirit. I'm indebted to her for that.
Wow... I can remember as a child seeing her walking out of Sigma Sound Studios in Center City Philadelphia. I always thought she was stunningly beautiful and carried a regality about her. I used to hang around that block because you never knew who you would see. I saw her going in once and she smiled and said, "hey cutie!". I think I displayed every tooth that resided in my mouth at the time. That was the first time I was overtly attracted to a woman.
Unfortunately, my cable company doesn't offer TV One which stinks for someone like me. When I watched the clips for Phyllis' segment, my heart sank. I was (and still am) a Phyllis fanatic...everyone knows it too. I saw her in Sophisticated Ladies -- she was like a beautiful goddess and I aspired to be like her one day. She was tall, gorgeous, could sing her face off and had the men hanging on to her every word. I've had her autobiography for over a year and could never get past the halfway mark. I know the tragic end and I just don't want to relive that time. You Know How To Love Me is my all time favorite Phyllis song, and I go on youtube and watch her videos (I get a kick out of this one).
I was fortunate to have a conversation with Phyliss Hyman in NYC (Sweetwaters), where Vaughn Harper did the "Quiet Storm". As usual Phyliss looked beautiful...I notice her as soon as she came in....with her trademark hat, and beautiful smile.
She was scheduled to play the Apollo with the Whispers. Kid from Kid N Play was talking...and I excused myself, and spoke briefly with Phyliss about performing in CT. I just promoted Keith Washington the prior year.
Phyliss music, her style, and her Love is timeless...her music is catalog, which should ONLY be redone by GREAT VOCALIST ! All my love to Phyliss Hyman...who was the type of person that would listen to a Lil soul like mine.
We miss you deeply.
I had seen Phyllis live 24 times (all at the Blue Note in New York City). "Music is my life you see, forever; as long as there's a breath in me". - She remained true to this till the end. Oh, how I miss my Ms. Hyman.
