I Really, Really Appreciated That Comment My Sistah ....... Ya Knew Bruddah ....... *TiZ*
There are many different layers to her vocal abilities. A diverse cultural background and love of any genres of music set the backdrop for her story.
A native of Pittsburgh, PA. Shauna Mishel has always had a sort of spiritual connection
with music. As a very small child her parents had to put a record player in room so that she would go to bed at night. She would fall into her peaceful slumber to the sounds of Roy Ayers or Isaac Hayes. She dreamed of being a star, a singer/actress and would often make up her own musicals that she would perform for her friends and family. She began recording early with the help of her great- Uncle David Parr a Singer/Songwriter and member of the 60’s recording group “The LaRells”. She recorded a remake of Denise William’s hit let’s hear for the boys at the age of eight, she decided then that she would write her own songs. She also had a passion for writing rhymes. By 11, she had become popular amongst her peers for her quick-witted verses and delivery, being one of Pittsburgh’s first female mc’s.
In her teen years she gained a little celebrity appearing weekly on live college radio; The University of Pittsburgh’s WPTS 98.5 FM , One of the new voices of hip-hop.
“Hip-hop prepared me for my musical journey, It toughened me up. It was 99% male dominated and here I was this tall, bony girl; rockin’ a Kangol with a skirt on , knee socks and shell-toed Adidas, the only female in the cipher. I had to show and prove in order to gain the respect from my male counterparts," Says Shauna.
Her creative writing abilities were blossoming also at that time and won her accolades with a numerous organizations since as the NAACP, YWCA.
Thus winning a local television performance at age 12.
A letter from Shauna’s Grade School Principal advised her mother to enroll her into a Performance Arts High School . That summer Shauna auditioned for CAPA; she started classes the following semester.
Several years later she broadened her listening audience and delightfully surprised her hip-hop peers with her reggae dancehall edge. Selecta and DeeJay Charlie Bubbles dubbed her Shauna Ranks “The Golden Voice of Pittsburgh”, her audience agreed.
Dancehall took her across the world, It helped her development as an artist learning the business first hand on the road , she often traveled alone being her own manager. She has recorded dub-plate specials for countless sound systems globally gaining new fans.
She has recorded a songs on The Youth Vibrations record label with the help of Producers, musicians,“ The Firehouse Crew” and The Legendary Engineer, Producer Bobby Digital at his studio in Jamaica.
She wanted the vet musician Dean Frazier on the horns it was granted. She has performed with and/or on the same stages as Little John, Echo Minnott,Shabba Ranks, Lady Patra,Beenie Man,Dennis Brown, and many other Jamaican music icons.
Shauna Mishel has appeared as Shauna Ranks, on many local hip-hop albums. Earning praises from both producers and artists.
In 2003 & 2004 Shauna won awards for both music genres, Best Hip-Hop Artist and Best Reggae Performer from The Sheridan Broadcasting Network and Pittsburgh’s Urban Radio Station WAMO FM 106.7
She opened for one of her favorite artists Mr. Big himself Ron Isley.
Winner three consecutive weeks on WAMO 106.7 FM’s Battle Of The Beats with dancehall track “ Big It Up," produced by Davon (D-Riggs)Webb and lyrics by Shauna Mishel. She also performed at Pittsburgh’s Summer Jam, with Tamia, MC Lyte and Skillz.
Shortly after a string of family and personal tragedies impacted her life, she decided to spend more time writing and recording about her experiences. This forced her into isolation while confronting the painful issues that she felt were preparing her for destiny.
Her life was no secret to young multi-talented producer and CEO of Hurrikane Records Davon (D-Riggs) Webb. He started CO-producing her music and recording her soulful expression. “ Shauna Mishel is known for her personally driven songwriting ability. She’s more than a Singer/Songwriter, she’s a Vocal Stylist. She has a signature sound, rich, smooth, melodic tones, she does her own backgrounds, harmonies etc. “says Davon(D-Riggs). The Internet has also been another vehicle to help her reach audiences that she wouldn’t have been able to previously; Her songs have been charting since 2006 and haven’t stopped. Her influences are Roy Ayers, Isaac Hayes, George Benson, Phyllis Hyman, Sarah Vaughn, Ron Isley, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Fela Kuti, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Diane Reeves, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Portishead, Donald Byrd, Teena Marie, Janet Jackson, Shirley Murdock, Diana Krall. Shauna Mishel continues to demonstrate why she has an ever-growing fanbase. She puts a modern day twist on classic soul. So far it has been a good year for her, nominated Best Female Vocalist in Pittsburgh’s 2008 Hip-hop Awards. She also became the First Lady of Hurrikane Records.
Shauna Mishel is currently working on her highly anticipated debut album “To Be or Not To Be” the songs are mainly Soul driven. “To Be or Not To Be” promises straight through listening pleasure and most certainly inspiration and enjoyment as she ponders William Shakespeare's question.
