Here is another one of my favorite lps, “When I Get Back Home” by Vernon Burch
from 1977 on Columbia Records. As far as I know this is his 2nd lp, and prior to his debut released in 1975 he spent time with the The Delfonics, The Bar-Kays amongst others. Vernon Burch is probably well known for his later releases on Chocolate City Records and his 1982 release on SRI Records that included the awesome number “Lovely Lady”. Nonetheless, “When I Get Home” is a record worth having, and proves that Stevie Wonder’s influence on other artists and their music dates back a long way. This lp, although being Vernon’s is heavily influenced by Stevie, take the track “Bye, Bye, Baby” that reminds the listener of Stevie’s “Don’t You Worry About A Thing”, but without the heavy Latin touch. Other notable tracks are “Mr. Sin“, “Paradise” and the title track “When I Get Back Home” all of which are given the Stevie treatment. Despite the obvious, this lp still has the Vernon treatment with some really good horn sections and an overall production and arrangement that is tight and precise.
I would definitely recommend this lp to any Stevie Wonder fan and to any one who isn’t (hard as that might be). To top it up, Vernon also mentioned Stevie in his thank you liner note and quote "One word of extra special thanks to my brother Stevie, the wonder boy".
