History of Shantinique Music and Sportswear
On November 13, 1975, Shantinique Music was established by owner Barry Beal. Starting with a $700 loan and a four hundred square foot building at 8620 Harper Ave in Detroit Michigan. On September 20, 1977, Barry married Josephine Shantinique Lee who joined him in his music business. There was a second location opened on Grand River and Hubbell, which was six hundred square feet. In 1977 Barry became a founding member of the United Federation of Music Retailers. In 1980 there was a third location established in the Macomb Mall which was forty-eight square feet. In 1982 a fourth location was established on Outer Drive and East 7 mile rd in Detroit, Michigan. In 1984 Barry closed all of the locations except 8620 Harper in Detroit. On March 16, 1984 another Shantinique Music store was opened at 13722 Woodward in Highland Park, Michigan. In 1986 Shantinique Music became a Billboard reporting store and entered into national prominence. That same year, Shantinique received a gold sales award from Warner Brothers Records for selling five hundred thousand copies of Prince, David Sanborn, and the Time albums. After that first award Shantinique Music received many more. In January of 1990 Shantinique moved from 8620 Harper Ave to 8933 Harper Ave. Two years later Shantinique Music received “Retailer of the Year” award from the Urban Network Magazine. In March of 1992 Barry Beal became very active in the record industry bringing to the forefront independent retailers.
